We hadn't seen each other for a long time, so we met under a palapa to eat and drink, as is our custom, and in that framework of pleasures, talk about what the palette of ideas offered us at the time. Placed in the universe and placed in the abyss at the same time, we discuss the world of culture that has linked us in different projects, the individual and collective life inserted in it, the desires and limitations that the future awaits us in this territory and others, in an increasingly bloody and uncertain future. Here is a synthesis of that long talk (which took place in an extended version of about 40 pages), with one of the most important sensitivities in Mexican art: the painter Daniel Lezama, in this particularly clear and sharp quote. Antonio Calera-Grobet (ACG): I suggest you start with a metaphor. Let's imagine Mexico as a social body with Parkinson's disease, perhaps a sad poliomyelitis. In critical condition. The disease already afflicts all its extremities, it has invaded all its States. A very sick body already, almost dying, that beats itself already fed up with its discomfort, as much as if it wanted to commit suicide. Because you can't go to Guanajuato, just as you can't go anywhere again. At all points life is worth nothing. Put your finger anywhere on the map. Not Sinaloa, Acapulco, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Vamos or Tlayacapan. Transcendental death, omnipresent.

Daniel Lezama (DL): Painful. But not being able to go a few kilometers is very badass, because suddenly you imagined yourself walking around because of its proximity. Not being able to go to Tlayacapan? Hey! There he would buy furniture, eat at the market, spend the afternoon having coffee with friends, family.

ACG: Yes, that is no longer possible. Our people will not even go to Puebla because they will be afraid, at any moment, that something might happen to them on the road. They kidnap, rape, torture and minimally kill, dismember and bury them. We once talked about the irrigation of truth in the "social body": the virtues of its culture but also, physically speaking, that is to say of its geography, of something very precise. We are supposedly licensed by our constitution to roam free through the federation. Death was punished for "assaulting" their paths, preventing them. And that's what happens. That we get gangrenous. There is damage thrombosis. And it is more: the case of the robbery to the house even makes it worse because you no longer need to go out to the street to be robbed, you can be robbed in your own home. Robbery and death at home. So we live in a cold, fearful, terrified body.
