- Joshua, what have you done this Thursday (the day of the interview)?

- In the afternoon I am still in my workplace, The Jazz Cultural Theater, on Bertenda Street in Bilbao (in front of the Campos Elyseos Theater).Today I have risen soon, as usual, I have done sports as I do practically every day, I have breakfast very comfortable coffee, roasted town bread with oil, ajito, avocado, goat cheese, fruit ..., and I have put myself toplay the piano for a while to enter and enjoy the music universe.

- And I hadn't started the day yet!

«Vestir bien ayuda a la inspiración y a la vida», recomienda el pianista Joshua Edelman

- Then I have come to Bilbao by Metro, to work on a new album dedicated to the Washington Square Park in Manhattan and the atmosphere of my childhood. It is a trio recording that reflects memories and experiences of the 60s and 70s.I am also preparing for September 18 in Bilbao our next 'private jazz session', this time in duo.

- Joshua, what is classicism in jazz and how is it preserved?

- With all my respects, I have never heard a jazz musician talk about classicism.Of tradition, yes.

- You are right: tradition is rather.

- I have heard of tradition, mastery, swing and dedication too. From my point of view, and with the experience of living jazz from a young age in New York, those of us who have dedicated ourselves in body and soul to this art have a vocation and a mission of giving continuity. That means that we play based on an aesthetic, a spirit and a series of criteria that connect us with our teachers and musical ancestors. And we always continue investigating, studying and wishing to convey to the different audiences and our children and disciples.

- This 2021 has edited two albums: the environmentalist and marine. Is the first the modern and the second the classic, or do I better say traditional?

- 'Jazz for the oceaans' is the ninth of the albums I have made as leader and 'tribute to the duke' the tenth. This leaving collaborations with other artists, which I have also done many. These last two albums have been recorded with different musicians, at different times of life, with different instruments and repertoires, but I would not classify them as modern and classic.

- Joshua, what are your favorite pianists and why do you like?

- I have been in love with the music of Theloniaus Monk, Bud Powell, Barry Harris, McCoy Tyner, Wynton Kelly, Kenny Barron, Phineas Newborn ... and of many others who are the pianists who marked the time in which I grew up.They excited me very much when I was still very young. They made me feel a unique, indescribable beauty and energy, which is the soundtrack of all my memories.

- What do you think of the Dominican Michel Camilo?

- Michel Camilo is a Latin pianist with a great technical domain and a great deserved projection. From that field they have reached me and more other pianists from New York and Puerto Rico have influenced me such as the newly missing Larry Harlow, Papo Lucca, or Eddie Palmieri. And Cuban music Rubén González, Bebo Valdés, Frank Emilio Flynn, Emiliano Salvador ... there are many.

- I will check what names I do not know. And the Mallorcan Marco Mezquida?Do you know him?

- If I tell you the truth, I have heard a lot about him but I have not had the pleasure of knowing or listening to him.

- How teacher are you trying to make your students especially?

- To my students I want to open the door to a fantastic world and infect them the taste and curiosity of exploring it.I seek to encourage you to see the creative possibilities that any element contains: a scale, a progression of chords, rhythms ... help them develop the innate abilities that music requires: the ear, memory, concentration, the ability to listen and observe,Mental agility. And foster interest in historical legacies.Almost nothing…

- And so much ... how long does it take to know if a student is not worth or does not like the piano?

- It's not a matter of being worth or not, I don't like talking in those terms. The important thing is to fall in love with the instrument and feel licensed to play, sing, invent, explor. If one is lucky enough to live in contact with art and music, and begins to participate in it from childhood, that can change your life.

- AHA.

- There are a lot of people who have suffered very negative experiences in music learning. They have bored, they have been told that they have not heard, that they are clumsy, that they do not study enough ... the teachers have thrown them the anger, they have laughed at them, they have humiliated them, they have told them that they are not worth and have sunk them the self-esteem.Not long ago they even hit them!

- As in the jazz drummer 'Whiplash'!

- If the student does not like the piano or does not connect with the teacher, he will already realize himself.

Joshua's tie is the keyboard of a piano / Antón Uribe

- The last question: you keep a very elegant aesthetic, even traveling by subway. You usually dress vest, cap, tie...Do you play well dressed help inspiration?

- Dressing good comes from family and trade. My father was a man who was always very well dressed, with a jacket and tie.In my time it was part of the trade dressing for acting.Nothing to get out of 'Casual' to a stage! That for me is inconceivable. The locker.Dress well helps inspiration and life.
