The modeling industry has gradually evolved towards diversity, whether it be in terms of sizes, the inclusion of people of different races, etc. It is in this context that it is impossible to ignore the rise of the so-called plus-size modeling, which proposes to show another type of body to which beauty stereotypes are imposed.Javiera Q. In Chile some exponents of this category are Javiera Wayne and Antonia Larraín, just to mention a few, but abroad we also have a representative and she is Javiera Q. Del Pozo.

The 24-year-old triumphs in the United States, a country she arrived in when she was just 11 years old. She currently has more than 100,000 followers on Instagram, is a youtuber, influencer and works with the agency "The Btwn" and therefore with distinguished brands such as Rue 21 and Fashion Nova.

“I was born in Santiago and my family came to the United States in 2007. I will be 25 in April, so I spent almost all my youth here in the State of Maryland (near Washington D.C)”, he details exclusively to AR13 about his rising career on North American soil.

Check out her interview below:

- How did you start modeling?

“I started modeling in September 2019 professionally and signed with my modeling agency around that date as well. I don't really consider my Instagram account to be just for modeling, I love taking pictures of myself. I started my work on YouTube and Instagram about three or four years ago."

- How did growing up with this double culture (the Chilean and the “gringa”) influence you?

“The customs are super different so understanding the culture here, which I find a little more reserved than in Chile, was a little difficult for me. I often find it hard to connect with the gringos, due to the obvious differences we have. I arrived here at the age of 11 and when I went to school I felt like I was in a movie. Small things also like not greeting with a kiss, or having to shake hands I found very strange. What struck me the most, in a good way, were all the cultures I had never seen. There are people of all races, colors, backgrounds, etc. I feel more open and free of prejudices thanks to that”

- You work with brands like Rue 21, Fashion Nova and recently we saw you modeling an outfit from Rihanna's SavagexFenty, how does it feel to be part of the catalog of these brands but especially Fenty?

Javiera Q. Del Pozo, model Chilean plus size who triumphs in the United States

“The best actually. It makes me very happy that I am representing my country that I love so much, seeing my features, and making the networks see that it is okay to be as one is; that it is not necessary to have a 'perfect' body to be able to model"

- Who are your references in modeling? What do you aspire to in one more year?

“I love Ashley Graham a lot, but really not many people follow or idealize because I feel a little bit toxic. I prefer to focus on myself and my goals. I would love to continue modeling and making my videos on YouTube, I know that there are many opportunities in this career, and you never know where you will end up. So I better let it develop itself and enjoy what comes my way."

- What do you think about Body Positive? Is it part of your life?

“I fully support it but I don't let it define my life either. I am many things and I don't want to be defined by just one thing. I find that we like to be part of groups to feel identified, but you have to be careful with the limits that you involuntarily set yourself. I love being part of Body-Positive, but I don't stop there. I talk about culture, injustices, art, I sit down to give advice, etc.

-Do you think your message has influenced other people to feel comfortable with their bodies?

“Many times I think not, but the messages I receive make me think so. And not only with the subject of being body-positive, being transparent with my followers also helps, because I also have my bad days. It makes me happy to know that women come to me for advice. I have kept very good connections like this”

- Although you live in the USA, you are always connected to Chile. Do you think that the gap regarding body positive is very wide, especially in advertising and media?

“It's hard to say without living there, but from what I've been told, yes. In the networks I think it is more open to body positive, but you have to go beyond that. Clothing stores that do not carry enough sizes or, for example, there are people on the beach looking at you strangely for wearing a bikini. These are things that need to be changed in our culture, but hopefully it will improve soon”

Finally, what message would you send to those people who today feel insecure about their physical appearance?

“There is an expression of Frida Kahlo's that goes like this: 'I am my own muse, I am the subject I know best'. That saying that has helped a lot in times when I feel alone. In the end, I focus on my stability, my career and my health. I try not to compare myself so much to other women, focus on my things, period. Insecurities are normal, don't let a number on the scale dictate how you live your life. We all have the right to feel good, and this message is not only for my plus-size friends, but for anyone who feels insecure."
