A simple but elegant garment like a scarf is a great ally when it comes to protecting the lungs and the entire respiratory system of anyone, but especially those who have suffered from covid-19 and have side effects. They are ideal for asthmatic people.

However, the scarf that protects “the cold regulating center, that is, the neck”, has not been a commonly used garment among Costa Ricans, especially men.

The healthy recommendation, which goes beyond fashion, is made by the pulmonologist Carlos Estrada, who says that although Costa Rica is a tropical country and does not have extreme cold temperatures, people need to wrap their necks warm to avoid health complications. .

“In recent days we have felt very cold due to meteorological phenomena and at times like this, preventive measures must be taken to avoid respiratory diseases. The most important thing is to protect the cold regulating center, that is, the neck.

“If a person arrives in a building where there is air conditioning, upon entering the body suffers a sudden change in temperature and can cause inflammation in the respiratory tract, rhinitis and even affect people who suffer from asthma. Athletes should also take care of themselves when they go out to play sports, there are some cloth collars that cover only that part and do not bother, ”he said.

The specialist explained that although cloth scarves, kerchiefs, and collars do not prevent covid-19 infections, they can complement the use of the mask. In addition, they help a lot to avoid allergies and even protect those who have already had coronavirus because many times these people have respiratory problems and protecting the neck favors recovery.

Irene Jara, Public Image consultant, says that scarves not only help health but are also always fashionable and give a special touch.

“They are very trendy and there are many styles, what people who use them have to take into account is which one suits their body type the most. Each person must determine if a long scarf, a shorter one, a thin one or a slightly thicker one suits their texture.

For example, short people should not wear a very thick scarf, or one with large knots, but one made of thin fabric.

“It is also important that people take into account that if they wear a patterned blouse, they should not wear a patterned scarf or neckerchief as well, but rather something plain, in addition, the color must look good with the rest of the clothing, a person does not must wear more than three colors at the same time,” he explained.

“These accessories can be used almost on any occasion and at any time, to go to work on women it looks very good, they can wear some solid design, pictures, discreet figures. If it is for a party, it can be a strong color that contrasts with the clothing, something more cheerful and festive”.

In the case of men, they can also wear scarves, as long as they are not wearing a jacket and tie, since that could overload the outfit. Some are more conservative and resist wearing this type of accessories, but others are in fashion and enjoy it a lot.

“If they go to work with pants and a shirt, they can wear a scarf or a collar, it makes them look very elegant. They can also use them when they go to the movies, to a party, to a meeting with friends, to eat or for a walk”, she expressed.

Karla Solano is a bracelet maker who has been making scarves for 14 years. She has her own little business and it's called Cambiáre.

The seller says that when she started her business she produced more than anything the traditional scarf, but little by little fashion has been changing and expanding.

“Many of my clients made trips and came telling me that they had seen different scarves and asked me to make them for them, so I started to make different products, but always to cover the neck.

One of those styles is the collar that is for both women and men. The collar is not worn rolled up, but the head is put in, they are very comfortable because they do not come loose.

"Many of my clients are asthmatic and they ask me for scarves, scarves and even ponchos to protect themselves from air conditioners at work, some even put mint or eucalyptus essences to feel the refreshing aroma," she said.

She said that more and more men are also looking to protect themselves from the cold.

“Motorcyclists look for me a lot to buy collars because they say that incredible chiflons hit them on the street. Also security guards who work at night and messengers who have to walk on the street all day.

Karla says that her products are also highly sought after by her clients to give gifts to acquaintances from other countries, especially in those where snow falls, since as they are made of wool they are quite warm.

“I make styles for all tastes, typical scarves, others with a fixed knot, some shorter, collars that also have a hat, in short, whatever people want and in the colors they want.

"For the end of the year parties, people look for bright colors such as red, green, men are more likely to ask for gray, blue or black," she detailed.

The prices of these accessories range from ¢6 thousand and up.
