“The public we are having now is, above all, young people who are looking for a place to party because they cannot go to the bar,” says the owner of a boat rental service in La Manga, who prefers to remain anonymous to talk about the situation of the sector. "I am not interested at all, I am looking for calm people, but I cannot put hard filters to select those who are entering, because we have to continue living," laments the businessman, who adds that at the time of hiring the boat, these people "do it in the most sneaky way because they know they're not to our liking, and then they show up with a week's worth of drinks."

In the years before the coronavirus, the users who demanded this type of trip through the sea were mainly foreigners and "people who knew how to recognize the work that one does," says the interviewee. For him, now “they are groups of friends who get together to pay for the package and drinks; they don't care if they start at 11 in the morning and they open a beer as soon as they enter». In addition, he says he misses "that time" when those who rented the boat wanted to "go sailing and see the beauty of this world."

Despite his discomfort, he admits that, unlike him, "there are companies that are more involved" in this business and that, although he "would love" if the previous business model could be resumed, he prefers to see the "positive" side. of the situation: «In the end, one way or another we managed to continue working».

Private swimming pools for rent: a safer leisure alternative

The rental of private pools in Spain, also in the Region, is another activity that has seen its numbers increase as a result of the pandemic. On the one hand, due to the appearance of platforms to carry out this model, such as Swimmy -the 'Airbnb' of swimming pools-, and on the other, because those who demand it see it as a safe alternative to being able to meet in a private environment. if they don't have a garden.

One of the rental pools on the Swimmy platform

Estefanía Leyva, Director of Communication of the French company, assures that this year the number of pool rentals has "tripled" the figures of last summer and that this is her moment, since she had "multiplied by eight" those of the last summer without covid. In addition, according to her data, "20% of its users are renting the pool to carry out a celebration."

For Leyva, it is "normal" for people to opt for this alternative "which offers you a safe and private environment with your group of friends or family."

This system also makes it easy to find a lease adapted to the plans and needs of its users, since the owners publish the restrictions they place on their spaces. "This system is here to stay," concludes Leyva.
