It looks like the futuristic fashion we often see in sci-fi movies will finally hit the ready-to-wear market. ECCO, the Danish leather goods company, has launched a new material that it describes as the world's first smooth, transparent cowhide.

Called Apparition, due to its almost ghostly appearance, the leather was developed over three years and the company reserves the details of how it achieved its transparency, due to trade secrets and not to give ideas to the competition.

The company did say that its researchers relied on tanning techniques used by the ancient Egyptians and Greeks. The material is available in a range of vibrant colors, and its creators hope it will soon appear in everything from bags and shoes to jackets and shirts.

For its launch, ECCO commissioned Icelandic-based Israeli designer Sruli Recht to create several garments, which at first glance look like they came from the set of the new Blade Runner movie. Sruli has specialized in the use of unconventional materials for his creations.
